Our vision is to help women vulnerable to human trafficking by helping them start businesses and bring their products to market under the Freegrance brand.
Imagine you are a single mom living in a small village in the developing world.
You have very limited education and few marketable skills, but that does not really matter because there are no job opportunities for you any way. You have been able to scrape by but your children are getting older and you are having trouble feeding them. Every night you listen to them cry themselves to sleep from hunger.
In desperation, you decide to leave the children with your mother and go to the city to find work. You heard there are lots of jobs and you can make enough money to send some home for your family.
After saying your goodbyes, with great hope, you use the last of your money to buy a bus ticket.
When you arrive you find a cold impersonal place that is much larger than you imagined. Where should you begin? You spend the first few days in hopeful expectation searching for a job. Eventually, reality sets in and you realize there is no job for you. You cannot return home with nothing. Your children are already suffering from hunger. You have to make money, their lives depend upon it. Finally, you are approached about a job opportunity. It will allow you to take care of yourself and your kids. You rush to the establishment and are devastated to learn you would be selling your body as a prostitute.
Of course you immediately turn the job down and begin frantically looking for something else — anything else. It’s been a few days since you ate and as hungry as you are you know your children are just as hungry. You wait as long as you can but you begin to consider the job. Perhaps it’s not so bad. It’s just a job, the only job you can find. Eventually, your desperation leads you back, and for the sake of your family, you become a prostitute.
This story plays out every day all over the world.
Women and girls find themselves selling the only commodity they have, their bodies, in order to provide for themselves and their families. They enter the sex industry and are trafficked for someone else’s profit. They make a small sum with which they scrape out a meager existence for themselves and their extended families.
The only way to get women like these out of the sex industry is to replace their income. They will not abandon their families to desperation. It is helpful to teach them a job skill or help them start a business. However, if they do not have a market for their product or service or no one in their village can afford them then they are left with no other option but to remain in the sex industry. We launched Freegrance Products LLC to give women an option beyond selling their bodies. We are helping them start businesses and produce products, many of which will be brought to market under the Freegrance Brand.
Of course starting businesses and bringing products to market costs money so we have committed to using 40 percent of our profits to accomplish this goal. Not every product we sell is made by women that we work with, but 40 percent of all profit is used to meet basic needs for poor families and ultimately serve to empower women through job creation.
You can change lives simply by purchasing any of the quality products from our store.
Since 2004, we have been working among the global poor.
Through our work with Living Bread Ministries, we have sought to help bring transformation in some of the poorest communities on the planet. During this time, we have seen terrible human suffering and despair resulting in what is often the biggest obstacle to transformation, hopelessness.
When people lose hope they either give up trying or worse they turn to alternative means of providing for themselves and their families. This can take a violent turn with gangs, drug dealing, theft and et cetera. Often, for women and young girls it means turning to selling the only valuable thing they have — themselves. We have seen this time and again over the years. After all, for many it is more shameful to let your family starve than to be a prostitute.
We have always used a comprehensive approach to work for genuine life change.
As a result we have come to understand how important job creation is in the process. The women who find themselves selling their bodies to care for their families would love to leave that lifestyle. However, if they cannot replace the income they typically will not leave. Watching their children eat from the garbage or worse go hungry is not an option for them.
We launched Freegrance Products LLC to give women an option beyond selling their bodies.
